How Different Agitator Types Affect Reactor Performance
In reactor design, the importance of the agitation system is often underestimated.
Even with a well-designed vessel and heating system, improper agitator selection can significantly reduce process efficiency.
Paddle and Propeller Agitators
These are suitable for low-viscosity, free-flowing liquids. They feature low energy consumption and simple structures, commonly used for dissolution, homogenization, or mild reactions.
Anchor and Frame Agitators
For higher-viscosity materials or applications requiring efficient wall heat transfer, anchor and frame agitators are preferred. Their wall-scraping action reduces fouling and localized overheating, making them popular in resin and coating production.
Ribbon Agitators
Ribbon agitators are designed for high-viscosity or paste-like materials. They promote both axial and radial flow, ensuring thorough mixing, but require higher motor power and robust mechanical design.
Selection Advice
Agitator selection should be based on material properties, process objectives, and vessel dimensions—rather than relying on a standard configuration.
